Couples Counselling Services

Helping Couples Find Security in Connection

Couples counselling sessions offer a secure and private environment for partners to navigate their relationship dynamics with a trauma-informed registered social worker. These sessions are dedicated to helping couples improve communication, resolve conflicts, rebuild trust, and strengthen their connection with one another.

Navigating Relationships through the Lens of Trauma and Attachment

As a trauma and attachment-based counsellor, I prioritize individual healing before addressing issues as a couple. Every couple carries with them personal narratives, some marred by past traumas, which often colour their perceptions and interactions. I start with individual counselling to address these personal issues, making sure they don't interfere with our couples sessions. Recognizing and addressing past traumas helps us better understand and improve our current relationships. It's important to tackle personal challenges first to effectively work together as a couple.

Relationships are Complex

Our relationships are influenced by our early attachment patterns and any past traumas. In the beginning, most relationships have strong connection and mutual understanding. However, as time progresses, underlying issues related to past experiences and attachment styles can surface. This often leads to conflicts, which are essentially struggles rooted in old wounds and unmet emotional needs. These struggles can make us feel distant, isolated, and even doubtful about the relationship's future. Questions like 'Why is this happening?', 'How did we get here?', or 'Is this relationship right for me?' might arise. If these concerns sound familiar, therapy, viewed through a trauma and attachment lens, can provide clarity and help in addressing these deep-rooted issues.

How Does Couples Counselling Work?

The process starts with a separate 30-minute Zoom call for each partner. This allows you to ask questions and get to know my approach. If both of you decide to move forward with me, we'll set up an initial 2-hour session. During this time, we'll discuss and align on goals, I'll assess your attachment styles, and provide key information about attachment and trauma. This information will be essential as we work together. The goal of this first session is to understand each person's expectations and set a clear foundation for our future sessions.

How Many Sessions Does it Take?

The number of sessions varies based on what's best for your relationship. Every relationship is unique, so whether you opt for weekly or bi-weekly sessions, the aim is to find a frequency that benefits both of you the most. All couples sessions are consistently 1.5 hours long, while individual sessions last between 50 to 60 minutes.
